The games room was starting to look like a police station. We had a table set aside for our desk. I had collected some office supplies from Marilee Hardy, so we had a large easel with a paper flip chart that was normally used for executive retreats. She had also loaned me a bunch of markers and pads of different-colored sticky notes.

The far corner was our evidence room. It now contained two desk chairs, a dish trolley, a brass lamp with a wet, felt base, and the damp bar cloth. I’d returned to Langston’s room and gathered up all his possessions. One card table held his clothing and overnight bag. Another displayed his toiletries, a British mystery novel with a bookmark in the middle, the key rings, and his cell phone.

Cavallo joined me, and he was carrying a large tray. “Sophie rose to the occasion. Lunch is served. Lasagna with all the trimmings.”

I took a look. To Danny, that meant two china plates with massive slabs of meat lasagna, a third plate heaped with garlic bread, two big bowls of green salad, and smaller servings of bean salad.

“Well done, Cavallo,” I joked. “Now, I won’t have to eat until I get home.”

“Bon appétit. Better eat while we can. Who knows what’s going to happen next? Plus, we need the brain power.”

Between mouthfuls, I described everything I’d put on the back burner while we dealt with the explosion, first aid for Rufus, and the relocation of Clive Langston’s body.

In my opinion, the highlights were my search of the bar and the recovery of the phone.

Danny agreed. “Way to go, Towns. What’s next?”

“Ask Taryn Exeter if I can borrow some cables. Get Jaime’s laptop out of the Jeep, and see if I can download anything off my devices. And I’m worried about tonight. Sheila told me the CSIS guys got stuck. No idea when they're going to get here. Yes, I want to solve Langston’s murder. But more importantly, I don't want anyone else hurt.”

“Definitely. I think we have to send everyone to their suites early this evening. You and I can monitor the upper hallways.”

“I want to go one step further. I’m going to set up some little alarms on the doors. And don’t forget, Simon and Marilee will be in another part of the house. I don’t want them roaming around, either.”

“True. And so are Sophie and Donovan. I checked. They have keys to spare rooms in the same hallway as the Hardys. Normally, they go home overnight but for obvious reasons, they'll be staying here.”

“Something’s been bothering me. It relates to how the killer attacked Langston. Let’s say Clive and his killer set up a meeting after-hours in the pub. But the choice of weapon, using a lamp sitting on the counter, sounds spur of the moment. Danny, when you think of espionage and murder, what comes to mind?”

Cavallo frowned. “I see what you mean. Fancy handguns with state-of-the art silencers, poison, injections, powders that are inhaled. Methods that are hard to identify, let alone trace.
